Creating a Strategic Board Agenda

The preparation for a the board meeting can be a time-consuming task. It involves coordinating dates with all the participants, distributing important information, and preparing an exciting agenda for the board ahead of time. A well-planned agenda for your board can ensure productive discussions that will result in effective decision-making and help you meet the goals of your organization. An agenda that is not well-planned can result in a dog’s feast of multiple items packed together, leaving no space for lively discussions and progress on crucial issues.

Boards should organize their agendas to begin with long-term plans and end with more operational matters like policies and procedures. This helps prevent the tyranny of urgent issues from consuming and distracting board members. It also keeps them focused on what’s feasible within the confines of a single meeting.

Ideally, you should allocate an appropriate amount of time for each item on your agenda. This will stop your meeting from going over time and ensure that each subject gets the appropriate amount of discussion for the desired outcome.

You can also include a section called “Nil” on your agenda for items that do not have a strategic significance or require clarification. Incorporating this heading could encourage other directors to bring up new and important questions for discussion. It could also be used to remind board members of the reason’ (i.e. its mission) they serve the company. This will allow them focus on the bigger picture.
